Dr Nietz trained as an undergraduate in her hometown in Hamburg, Germany. She also completed a doctorate in Neuroradiology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. She moved to South Africa in 2006 and completed her training as a specialist surgeon at the University of the Witwatersrand.
She is based in Johannesburg and works in government as well private practice at Morningside Medi-Clinic providing breast care to both public and private patients alike.
Dr Nietz is the Head of Breast Surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The unit treats more than 200 newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer each year. She has a keen interest in teaching both under- and postgraduate students and is a lecturer at the Department of Surgery of the University of the Witwatersrand.
The breast clinic is involved in multiple research projects including an international NIH grant-funded study on HIV and breast cancer.
